The anatomical and functional features and pathologies of the bones, joints and soft tissues of children and adolescents differ from those of adults, and the experience in adult MSK imaging is not sufficient to reliably assess paediatric MSK pathologies.
Furthermore, paediatric MSK pathologies are not infrequently the manifestation of complex genetic, congenital or acquired systemic pathologies. Compared to adults, adolescent sports pathology and trauma of upper limb has several important peculiarities compared to adults.

Radiographs and ultrasound are used more frequently than in adults to make examinations more acceptable and to reduce examination time or avoid radiation. In children, even advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and CT are complex to interpret due to the presence of highly specialised structures such as the growth plate periosteum and cartilage or rapidly changing structures such as the bone marrow.

By the end of the course, the radiologist will be trained to a systematic and evidence approach to the most common clinical scenarios requiring an imaging of the upper limb in children and adolescents.

The teaching in small groups aims to stimulate interactive discussions on illustrative cases selected from the archive of those that have aroused the curiosity and interest of radiologists in training over the last decade at the University Children's Hospital in Brussels, Belgium.

The course is ideally coupled with Prof Paolo Simoni's lower limb course to provide a solid and comprehensive introduction to imaging of the appendicular skeleton in children and adolescents.

To continue growing your knowledge on paediatric MSK imaging, we recommend also following Dr. Simoni's fellowship on Lower Extremity: ONLINE Paediatric Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship – Lower extremity

Learning objectives

  • To recognise the normal imaging features of the growing MSK upper limbs on radiographs, ultrasounds, CT and MRI
  • To develop a systematic assessment of upper limb in children, focusing on specific on key concepts for each class of age.
  • To become familiar with most common diagnoses, tips and tricks in pediatric MSK imaging of the upper limb.

Programme will include

  • Lectures highlighting common injuries
  • Lectures focusing on systematic assessment and reporting
  • Collective base-based learning and active discussion with mentor on selected illustrative cases
  • Q&A time to address specific topics with mentor (techniques, protocols, advanced imaging)
  • Lifetime access to slides, session recordings, and other course materials
  • Access to cases discussed in the class prior and after the fellowship (for 1 year)
  • A personal dashboard and course materials on the TMCA online platform
  • Certificate of attendance - An application has been made to the UEMS/EBR for CME accreditation of this event
